Upgrade Options: You basically have two options to upgrade a Windows based 5.5 v Center: My approach for this particular environment (which is a Nested ESXi lab environment) was to ensure a smooth upgrade to v Sphere 6.0 Update 2 and then look to upgrade again to 6.5 once is thaws outs in the market.
For those that wish to move away from their Windows v Center, there is nothing stopping you from going down the Migrate2VCSA path, and it is possible to migrate directly from 5.5 to 6.5.For more information, see the Moving from a Deprecated to a Supported v Center Server Deployment Topology Before Upgrade or Migration section of the v Sphere Upgrade Guide.If you have a complex v Sphere 5.x or 6.0 environment, you may prefer to upgrade your v Sphere environment over the course of several maintenance windows.The v Sphere Client and the v Sphere Web Client are packaged on the v Center Server ISO.You can install one or both clients by using the VMware v Center™ Installer wizard.Unfortunately, patching/updating of v Center 6 appliance is a little bit different but still easy - update: since VCSA 6.0 U1 again you can use VAMI to patch v Center Appliance as well!To update/patch your v Center 6.x Appliance, please follow the below steps: As I have shown above, patching/updating of VCSA 6.x is different than v Center Appliance 5.x but still not complicated 🙂 If your patching is successful, you can delete the snapshot of VCSA 🙂 Update 10th September: Since VCSA 6.0 U1 you can again update your v Center Appliance via GUI!
